What justification is there when seeing
what strikes us as lowly
we view it with contempt?
See a poor man
in his humble circumstances -
wanting a bath, thatched hair.
He's not one who we commonly
would consider our friend.
In prudish disdain
we have forsaken him,
called him vile and indecent.
In the cold pit of our being
we seek justification
from those as blind as we.
