Mater Keema

This is based on a ground beef (keema=ground beef, mater=peas) recipie from India with lots of taste. You can cook it for a somewhat shorter time, but the longer it cooks the better the flavor.
  • 1 medium onion
  • 2 cloves garlic
  • 1 piece of ginger about 1 inch cube
  • cinnamon stick (about 1 inch long)
  • 2 whole cloves
  • 2 T vegetable oil
  • 2 peppercorns
  • 1 bay leaf
  • 1½ tsp ground corriander
  • ½ tsp ground cumin
  • ¼ tsp ground turmeric
  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 2 14½ oz cans diced tomatos
  • 2 cups peas (fresh or frozen)
  • salt to taste
  • hot pepper to taste
Chop onion, garlic and peeled ginger root finely.
Heat the oil on medium and add the cinnamon, cloves,
peppercorns and bay leaf for 10 seconds and then add
the onion, garlic and ginger fry for about 10 minutes
then add the corriander, cumin and turmeric and fry
for about 5 more minutes. Add the ground beef and brown
it. Add the tomato, peas, salt & hot pepper and simmer
for an hour adding up to a half cup of water if necessary.
Serve over rice.
