CJS 1

On January first Nathalie Kalbach of N*Studio started her Creative Jumpstart 2016 workshop. At the last minute in December (29th?) I decided to join.

After that, things kind of fell apart. Nothing bad happened, but I'm not the mnost organized person. I kept thinking "After I get suchandsuch done I'll work on CSJ."  Well, suchandsuch never got done because to complete it I also had to do A. To finish A I had to do B. B had some kind of complication/breakdown that required me to do C. On my way to do C, I saw D needed attention. And so on and so forth. At first I didn't really think too much about it, but by mid month it hit me.

That's when I decided to go paint and paste whether I finished anything else or not. This semi works. Some things have to be done. I had an all day class one day and I ended up working on that all last weekend. I have also realized that I don't know what I'm doing enough to finish something in one day. Sometimes I have to think about it before I have an idea for it.

My first page (I'm doing most of this in my studio journal) was actually started in December. After watching the first CSJ video, I thought I should apply what I took from it. It might have been a good idea, but I still don't know a lot of the art media I have. I had used ink once and assumed they all work the same. Don't know if it was the brand or just the particular bottle of ink, but it did not mist. It poured! Then I tried to fix it. Um, yeah. That was a lot more red than I planned or wanted!

Yikes! Well, Matisse, our first inspiration artist, did use bold colors. That's what I like about his work. The red was supposed to be a halo around a bird mask, but I don't see a bird. I did see a dog, though. (Think hidden pictures and clouds.*) I liked that, so I painted him so he showed up better.

I can think of a few much more Matisse-like ways of painting him now that I've seen a few more videos. I knew it wasn't particularly Matissse-like, but at the time I didn't know what I needed to do to "fix" it. I should have left it alone and unfinished, but I kept adding paint.

Actually this photo looks better than the real thing.

So Sad! But this prepared me for the next  (the first again) painting. Or so I thought...

(To be continued.)

*I actually see a lot of things using this method with the photo on screen -- even a bird, but not the one I intended.
