Dark Night

Dark Night

Feeling distressed when I learned my neighbor's cancer was back, I painted blue, orange and green across the page. I left it like that for a while.

Later I was using my Cameo, but the blade is stuck, so it only cuts thin paper. And the paper I had kept tearing. So I have these ragged black trees. I didn't know what else to do on the page, so I pasted them on. I had also cut some black flowers with a punch, and I pasted them down. I left it again because all I could see was Halloween and I didn't want that.

Today I went down and decided to try an experiment I'd been thinking about. I painted over the whole picture with ModgePodge mixed with dark blue paint. At first I thought I'd messed up, but as the ModgePodge dried, the color became translucent. I half outlined the trees and flower with a black Sharpie and sketched long tree shadows with a dark gray Sharpie shadow. I dotted the sky with silver sparkle glue. Then I realized those long shadows would be made by a moon, but I did a rather poor job of making one. I wanted it to be gibbous with the hint of the whole moon (which is how I see the real moon), but working in the corner was awkward. Finally, I found mom's white pen and wrote the words.

It's OK, but it needs something and I don't know what. The night wash didn't create quite the depth I was going for, but that was a good experiment.

(Click on the photo to see it full size. The edges of the page are scalloped. Beyond that it's the rest of the pages, the cover and/or the pillow I set it on to photograph.)

I will use the wash again, but do shadows and other details before adding it. I'm sure planning it a bit more would help, too. I was in a funk when I started it, so not thinking ahead at all.

I realize that I'm trying to create some of the qualities I get with digital imagery with layers. That's funny, because when I make digital journal pages, I'm trying to emulate a paper journal.
