TAST -Stitch 1: Fly Stitch

TAST -Stitch 1: Fly Stitch

Sharon Boggon is rerunning TAST (Take-a-Stitch-Tuesday) and since I haven't done much hand stitching lately, and I do enjoy it,  I jumped in.

You can find TAST on Pintangle and Facebook

The above photo is my creation for the fly stitch. I was really inspired by all the posts on Facebook. I think this going to be a lively group this time.

The flower and the butterflies are nylon cord (about =to size 5 perle cotton). The stem is 8 perle cotton. The leaves are a fine crochet cotton, about as heavy 2 strands of floss. The dog is a craft thread, cotton, I think, and slightly fuzzy, with a metallic strand. The turquoise single stitches are the same, but without the metallic strand. The honeycomb is craft ribbon (waxed ? twine). And the spider is a double strand of DMC floss for the body (2 french knots, one on top of the other), and a single strand for the legs.

This is what I posted on Facebook, but I kept seeing so much lovely stitching, I just had to add more. (Well, that and the fact that my sample was so off center on the fabric I chose.)

First thin I thought of was lavender. I did seven stems in stem stitch and then added lots of fly stitch leaves. At that point I figured I could have done the stems the way I did the leaves and it would have been more like real lavender. That's done in DMC perle 5. I also used DMC perle 5 for the flowers which are tiny, tight fly stitches. I LOVE how the variegated thread worked on  the flowers. The fishies are a craft cotton like perle 5. Back up to the top, the sun, that variegated yellow collection of fly stitches at the top left, is also done with the craft thread. The birds on the top right are DMC perle 8.

I had fun. And now it's Tuesday in Australia, so I have another stitch to get working on.
